Science - Body Books

In sixth grade, we are also working on embedding technology use into our science curriculum as well.  With the move NGSS, our science department has been a bit of disarray, but we are really trying to hit a few units very hard.  For Body Systems, our students will be designing a book targeted for a 3rd - 5th grade audience.  I look forward to writing my reflection once we get to this project in the spring!

Here is a snippet from the directions page:

Your human body book must include:

  • Your research question
  • At least one body system
  • A visual that models of how parts of a cell work to support life
  • An explanation of how cells make up body systems
  • A visual that models how each body system works to support life
  • An explanation of how different body systems work together
  • A “References” page that lists your sources of information

You will choose:

  • Whether your book is:
    • A reference book - designed to illustrate and explain how the human body works
    • A story book - following a character in a story that teaches about the human body
  • Which system(s) you will focus on
    • Circulatory
    • Nervous
    • Respiratory
    • Digestive
    • Excretory
    • Muscular
  • What type of book you want to make
    • Regular story book
    • Comic Book
    • Digital Book

Your human body book will be assessed on:

  • Asking Questions - Your Research Question
  • Modeling - Your visual models of cells and body systems
  • Justifying/Constructing an Explanation - Your book’s text about how the body works
  • Selection of Evidence - Information you use to support the book’s explanations
  • Selecting Relevant Sources - The quality of the sources you use for information

Writing - Research in the 21st Century

In the third trimester, we will be teaching our students how to conduct research and present their findings in an organized essay.  We will be using Google Classroom to assign the included hyperdoc and graphic organizer found in the link below.  Students will conduct research online, practicing safe searches and checking for credibility.  After teaching them how to cite sources, embed quotes, and provide commentary, students will begin their outlines.  Once they have completed rough drafts, we will then use Canvas to assign peer editors and go through an extensive revision process.  If time allows, students will be presenting their findings to the class in a multimedia presentation.  This is an ambitious project, but I know it will be beneficial to our students.  Reflection to come in May! Social Studies - Augmented Reality

In sixth grade, we continue to push the envelope on how to best use technology in the classroom.  We are working on incorporating an augmented reality project for our ancient Rome unit.  In this project, students will film videos educating their peers on a particular topic.  Then, using HP Reveal, these students will make a "trigger" in their textbooks, a picture, or other visual source that will send their peers directly to their video.  This is an excellent opportunity for collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking! Reflections and best practice to come soon! Link to Google Drive Folder: Rome - Augmented Reality
